Where to SUP
Best SUP spots near Ljubljana
Looking for the right water for your rented board? Whether you want the city centre or the quiet of the Ljubljana Marshes and surroundings, there are plenty of good spots in and near Ljubljana. You pick up the boards at Alešovčeva 12 (Šiška); below are five popular SUP launches. These are hints, not guided tours — conditions change, and you paddle at your own risk.
Match the water to your experience
If this is your first time on a board, start on a lake with no current (Zbilje or Trboje) or at Koseze pond (~3 km from pickup). The Ljubljanica through the centre is scenic but has tourist boats, bridges and other traffic. Skip the Sava at Tacen as a beginner. Technique is covered in SUP basics.

1. River Ljubljanica (old town and Špica)
- Distance from the centre: 0 km (in the city)
- Difficulty: beginner to intermediate
- Put-in: Park Špica or Trnovski pristan
Ljubljana is one of the few European capitals you can experience from the water. Paddle past Tromostovje, under the Dragon Bridge, and see Ljubljana Castle from a different angle. From Špica you can also turn into the quieter Gruber Canal.
The current in the centre is usually very mild, but watch tourist boats and keep a sensible distance. Do not stop under bridges; lower the paddle if clearance is tight. Turn back before you are tired — upstream is slower than it looks.

2. Podpeč on the Ljubljanica (at the bridge)
- Distance from the centre: ~15 km (about 20 min toward the Marshes)
- Difficulty: beginners to intermediate
- Put-in: at the bridge in Podpeč (easy bank access)
Podpeč is one of the best launches for the marsh stretch of the Ljubljanica. The river is wide and calm here, surrounded by nature. From this put-in you can paddle toward Ljubljana or upstream toward Vrhnika.
A good choice for longer, quieter sessions away from the city. Check the flow before you go — calm water is ideal.

3. Lake Trboje (Čolnarna Trboje)
- Distance from the centre: ~25 km (about 25–30 min by car)
- Difficulty: beginners and families
- Put-in: at the café / Čolnarna Trboje
This reservoir on the Sava is one of the most popular SUP spots near Ljubljana. The water is very calm, the banks are green, and the lake is known for birds (including swans).
Access at the boathouse is easy; afterwards you can stop for a drink or dessert on the terrace.

4. Lake Zbilje
- Distance from the centre: ~15 km (about 20 min by car)
- Difficulty: beginners
- Put-in: Kavarna Zbilje / along the shore
A classic day trip from the capital. Lake Zbilje is a wide, calm surface — good for a first stand or a relaxed afternoon paddle. Wind builds waves faster than in the city; if the board is hard to turn, head back to shore.
On sunny weekends parking fills up, so morning or late afternoon is easier. Respect swimmers and any local lake rules.

5. River Ižica (Ljubljana Marshes)
- Distance from the centre: ~10 km (Ig / Matena)
- Difficulty: beginner to intermediate
- Put-in: the bridge in Ig or in the village of Matena
A good choice if you want quiet and nature. The Ižica is a clear, cool stream through the Ljubljana Marshes landscape park: stay off protected meadows, do not disturb birds, take rubbish with you.
The river is narrower and winding, so paddling both upstream and down works well. Put-ins can be muddy and summers buggy — not the first choice while you are still learning to stand.

From pickup to the water
- Inflate at the water on grass or a smooth surface — not on grit-covered asphalt. A pump is included in the rental.
- A car is the easiest: the packed board fits in a boot. Do not roof-rack an inflated board unless you have straps and know how to secure it.
- Bike or city bus with a 3-metre bag is awkward; cycling to Koseze pond can work, Špica less so.
- Parking at Špica fills up in summer. Have a backup (Grudnovo nabrežje / Prule) or arrive early.
Weather, safety and etiquette
- Stay off the water in thunderstorms, strong wind, or high dirty water after rain.
- On lakes, wind builds chop quickly; beginners should stay close to shore.
- Wear an ankle leash and, if you are not a confident swimmer, a life jacket.
- Phone in a dry bag. Do not leave keys and wallets in plain sight on the bank.
- Alcohol and SUP mix poorly, especially on the Ljubljanica among boats.
- This is not a guided tour: read local signs, swimming-area rules and any temporary closures.
